At the beginning of the year of the monkey, our school has just welcomed Mary Ann Casas, an exchange teacher from Bend, Oregon, USA. She will be engaged in teaching oral English, English elective courses, American culture as well as research on English teaching.

Ms. Casas arrived in Yangzhou on the night of February 18. As the first American exchange teacher since the new agreement for in-depth exchanges and cooperation in education between Yangzhou and Bend came into effect, she, accompanied by Xu Jia, an English teacher of the school, couldn’t wait to come to her new school in the early morning the next day. She had a short tour around the campus and then got her new teaching assignments. Principal Zhang Tianruo gave Ms. Casas a warm welcome in the conference room of the administration building. He first expressed his appreciation for Ms. Casas’ coming to teach in Yangzhou, and asked how well she adapted to the new environment. As to the teaching work of the new semester, principal Zhang proposed specific requirements, hoping she can get herself accustomed to the new environment, adjust herself to the new life, familiarize herself with the new work in the new family of High School Affiliated to Yangzhou University as soon as possible so that the school can turn on a new appearance, bring new vitality to teachers and students.

Ms. Casas comes from bend, Oregon and teaches Spanish in Bend high school. She has been living in Oregon since her birth and this is her first time to China, and also her first time to leave the American continent. She has just arrived here in Yangzhou. Therefore, the city has left her a very good first impression: compared to other cities, Yangzhou city is not that big, but in her opinion, Yangzhou is a big city; administrators and new colleagues of the English department are warm and friendly and she feels grateful and full of expectations for the future.

On the morning of Feb 20, Ms. Casas and Ms. Pfister (an American exchange teacher in Yangzhou High School), invited by English teaching and Research Station of Yangzhou City, made an outstanding presentation on Foreign Language Education in the United States for all middle school and high school English teachers of the city proper and they were highly praised by all the participants.

Undoubtedly, the arrival of Ms. Casas will add new vitality and energy to the foreign language teaching of High School Affiliated to Yangzhou University as well as the city of Yangzhou.
