On the afternoon of March 29, our American teacher Mary Ann Casas taught in the school micro-classroom, with her 16-year-old daughter, Madeleine Kaeser, participating on the same stage. Teachers from the school’s foreign language department and students from class 9 of senior grade 1 (10th grade) were there, watching this spectacular open class.

As her daughter and her Chinese students are of a similar age, Ms. Casas specially designed this class as an interactive class for both Chinese and American adolescents. She encouraged students to ask questions about the topic of campus culture. At the beginning, the students were somewhat shy and inactive. Ms. Casas tried a variety of incentives to break the ice, and finally one student bravely asked Madeleine the first question: whether she can drive. Madeleine said that she has learned to drive under the supervision of adults, and she has passed her road test and written examination, therefore in a few days, when she turns 16, she will automatically obtain a driver's license. Then, she said, in Bend High School in Oregon, roughly 75% students drive their own car to school. With the ice broken and common topics found, the classroom atmosphere was suddenly stirred up, with questions coming up one by one, chiefly about school curriculum, homework during vacations, reading either inside or outside school, canteen meals of schools, favorite pop stars and so on. The mother and daughter replied to those questions one by one, integrating the topic of American culture into their answers. Class 9 students were also interested in the knowledge and experiences of the mother and the daughter so far in China. Diverse ideas were exchanged in this encounter of Sino-U.S. cultures, where forty minutes seemed to go by in a second. When the bell announced the end of the class, the cross-culture exchange was still heatedly going on.

With the deepening of education internationalization, opening the school to the world has become one of the focuses of the school’s core tasks. At the start of “the 13th 5-year plan” and the new round of the "Yangzhou-Bend exchange agreement" being put into effect, Mary Ann Casas is the first to teach in China. For more than a month, her hard work and her cheerful personality have helped her win the love of students. Last week, she hoped modestly to have her colleagues in the Foreign Language Group watch her teaching and offer some advice and therefore she applied for an open class to the dean’s office and they happily accepted her application.

The opening class of Mary Ann Casas offered her Chinese colleagues an opportunity to further learn world-class advanced education ideas and education methods. Simultaneously, the style of Ms. Casas’ teaching has helped further promote the school-based curriculum development and implementation.
